    New Terminologia Anatomica highlights the importance of clinical anatomy

    Although not all authors agree that Terminologia Anatomica merits special attention, any type of scientific terminology should be clear, exact, logical, coherent and worldwide accepted. A precise definition of every anatomical term is also crucial. New changes have recently been approved by the Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology as the previous version of terminology required minor revisions. This situation offers an opportunity to take a closer look at these new and interesting modifications. It turns out that selected traditional terms have been excluded from the list of official anatomical names. Furthermore, many changes have been introduced to modernise the Terminologia Anatomica. Nevertheless, the new version of anatomical terminology has both strengths and limitations, which warrants further refinement

    Impulsively Generated Linear and Non-linear Alfven Waves in the Coronal Funnels

    We present simulation results of the impulsively generated linear and non-linear Alfv\'en waves in the weakly curved coronal magnetic flux-tubes (coronal funnels) and discuss their implications for the coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. We solve numerically the time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations to obtain the temporal signatures of the small (linear) and large-amplitude (non-linear) Alfv\'en waves in the model atmosphere of expanding open magnetic field configuration (e.g., coronal funnels) by considering a realistic temperature distribution. We compute the maximum transversal velocity of both linear and non-linear Alfv\'en waves at different heights in the coronal funnel, and study their response in the solar corona during the time of their propagation. We infer that the pulse-driven non-linear Alfv\'en waves may carry sufficient wave energy fluxes to heat the coronal funnels and also to power the solar wind that originates in these funnels. Our study of linear Alfv\'en waves show that they can contribute only to the plasma dynamics and heating of the funnel-like magnetic flux-tubes associated with the polar coronal holes.Comment: 16 pages of the text and 3 figure

    Should Terminologia Anatomica be revised and extended? A critical literature review

    The first edition of the Terminologia Anatomica was published in 1998 by the Federative Committee for Anatomical Terminology, whereas the second edition was issued in 2011 by the Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminologies. Since then many attempts have been made to revise and extend the official terminology as several inconsistencies have been noted. Moreover, numerous crucial terms were either omitted or deliberately excluded from the official terminology, like sulcus popliteus and diaphragma urogenitale, respectively. Furthermore, several synonyms are to be discarded. Notwithstanding the criticism, the use of the current version of terminology is strongly recommended. Although the Terminologia Anatomica is open to future expansion and revision, every change should be made after a thorough discussion of the historical context and scientific legitimacy of a given term. The anatomical nomenclature must be as simple as possible but also precise and coherent. It is generally accepted that hasty innovation ought not to be endorsed. Therefore, there is a need to take a closer look at these new proposals as they have been presented in numerous dispersed papers. This article provides an overview of these issues and concentrates on selected revisions and extensions that are didactically and clinically useful, thereby summarising the salient aspects of these new and compelling proposals

    Terminologia Anatomica and its practical usage: pitfalls and how to avoid them

    In 2016, the Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology tentatively approved the updated and extended version of anatomical terminology that replaced the previous version of Terminologia Anatomica (1998). This modern version has already appeared in new editions of leading anatomical atlases and textbooks, including Netter’s Atlas of Human Anatomy, even though it was originally available only as a draft and the final version is different. We believe that updated and extended versions of anatomical terminology are important and they can be a powerful tool in communication between anatomists and other specialists around the world. In general, the new version uses more precise and adequate anatomical terms and many segments, including the part dealing with the nervous system, which is also known as the Terminologia Neuroanatomica, have been considerably improved. Nevertheless, some segments have not been extended or modernised, while other parts have been modified considerably, thereby posing a challenge to those who prefer the traditional version of Latin terminology because a number of official names for bones, muscles, organs and blood vessels have been changed. Whilst most of these changes seem to be inspired by a long anatomical tradition and thus cannot come as a surprise to anyone in the field, other modifications are characterised by terminological innovativeness. Selected new and unexpected changes that might cause confusion among those who prefer traditional anatomical terms and definitions are discussed here

    The Terminologia Anatomica matters: examples from didactic, scientific, and clinical practice

    The proper usage of the anatomical terminology is of paramount importance to all medical professionals. Although a multitude of studies have been devoted to issues associated with the use and application of the recent version of the anatomical terminology in both theoretical medicine and clinical practice, there are still many unresolved problems such as confusing terms, inconsistencies, and errors, including grammar and spelling mistakes. The aim of this article is to describe the current situation of the anatomical terminology and its usage in practice, as well as explain why it is so important to use precise, appropriate, and valid anatomical terms during the everyday communication among physicians from all medical branches. In this review, we discuss some confusing, obsolete, and erroneous terms that are still commonly used by many clinicians, and surgeons in particular, during the process of diagnosis and treatment. The use of these ambiguous, erroneous, and obsolete terms enhances the risk of miscommunication. We also provide some edifying examples from everyday clinical practice

    Metabolites that confirm induction and release of dormancy phases in sweet cherry buds

    Here we report on metabolites found in a targeted profiling of ‘Summit’ flower buds for nine years, which could be indicators for the timing of endodormancy release (t1) and beginning of ontogenetic development (t1*). Investigated metabolites included chrysin, arabonic acid, pentose acid, sucrose, abscisic acid (ABA), and abscisic acid glucose ester (ABA-GE). Chrysin and water content showed an almost parallel course between leaf fall and t1*. After ‘swollen bud’, water content raised from ~60 to ~80% at open cluster, while chrysin content decreased and lost its function as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Both parameters can be suitable indicators for t1*. Arabonic acid showed a clear increase after t1*. Pentose acid would be a suitable metabolite to identify t1 and t1*, but would not allow describing the ecodormancy phase, because of its continuously low value during this time. Sucrose reached a maximum during ecodormancy and showed a significant correlation with air temperature, which confirms its cryoprotective role in this phase. The ABA content showed maximum values during endodormancy and decreased during ecodormancy, reaching 50% of its content t1 at t1*. It appears to be the key metabolite to define the ecodormancy phase. The ABA-GE was present at all stages and phases and was much higher than the ABA content and is a readily available storage pool in cherry buds.Peer Reviewe

    Metabolites in Cherry Buds to Detect Winter Dormancy

    Winter dormancy is still a “black box” in phenological models, because it evades simple observation. This study presents the first step in the identification of suitable metabolites which could indicate the timing and length of dormancy phases for the sweet cherry cultivar ‘Summit’. Global metabolite profiling detected 445 named metabolites in flower buds, which can be assigned to different substance groups such as amino acids, carbohydrates, phytohormones, lipids, nucleotides, peptides and some secondary metabolites. During the phases of endo- and ecodormancy, the energy metabolism in the form of glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle was shut down to a minimum. However, the beginning of ontogenetic development was closely related to the up-regulation of the carbohydrate metabolism and thus to the generation of energy for the growth and development of the sweet cherry buds. From the 445 metabolites found in cherry buds, seven were selected which could be suitable markers for the ecodormancy phase, whose duration is limited by the date of endodormancy release (t1) and the beginning of ontogenetic development (t1*). With the exception of abscisic acid (ABA), which has been proven to control bud dormancy, all of these metabolites show nearly constant intensity during this phase.Peer Reviewe

    This article considers the extent to which private-state school differences in post-secondary outcomes can be explained by family background, secondary school achievement, or neither of the above. We find that privately educated children’s more advantaged family backgrounds and higher levels of school achievement are the main reasons why this group is more likely to enter university and work in professional jobs. However, even after accounting for family background and high school achievement, non-trivial private-state school differences in later lifetime outcomes remain.     303. Image registration – precise quality assessment of radiotherapy without necessity of showing corresponding points in simulation and portal images

    PurposeEnabling the quality assessment of radiotherapy to be made in daily practice, using the new software tool to analyze the simulation and portal images.MethodIn the registration of the anatomical structures as well as the irradiation fields, the features used as landmarks are the edges. The significant edge fragments must be chosen manually, but without showing any specific corresponding points. Field edges marked with wires in the simulation image are found fully automatically with the original combination of a dedicated line edge detector and a version of hierarchical, combined Hough transform. The registration is guided by the robust accuracy criterion using the modified Hausdorff distance measure. The only parameter of the measure – quantile rank, or share of data used in comparison – is not fixed, but evolves from 1 to 0 during the optimization of the accuracy. This has two advantages. 1: The user can choose the result found for the share corresponding to the actual share of erroneous data in the images, which can be seen only after the results for all the possible ranks are known. 2: The algorithm can avoid the local minima. The registration takes few seconds on a typical PC. The method has been implemented in a software tool which supports the complete process of measurement, and has been tested in clinical triais with positive result.ConclusionsThe modified Hausdorff distance measure with evolving rank is a good and efficient registration accuracy measure for quality assessment of radiotherapy based on the comparison of portal and simulation images
